the retro f1 redesign
For this project, I reimagined the liveries of three iconic Formula 1 cars, blending retro aesthetics with modern design sensibilities. The aim was to celebrate the rich history of these cars while presenting them in a way that resonates with today’s motorsport audience. Each poster focuses on a different car and Grand Prix, showcasing the unique liveries of the Ferrari 312 T2, McLaren MP4/4, and Lotus 33, and reinterpreting them through contemporary graphic design techniques.
The design process involved balancing nostalgia with modern aesthetics, ensuring that the posters maintained the essence of each car’s heritage while aligning with today’s visual trends in Formula 1. The Ferrari 312 T2 poster uses the flowing lines of the Italian flag to create a dynamic, bold design that emphasises movement, while the integration of sponsor logos maintains the clarity of the livery’s original form.
The McLaren MP4/4 poster takes a minimalist approach with a top-down perspective, focusing on sharp, clean lines. A subtle Monaco backdrop references the car's legacy at the iconic circuit, creating a sense of nostalgia while keeping the design modern and impactful.
The Lotus 33 poster features a geometric interpretation of the Union Jack, infusing the design with energy and movement. The car’s classic green and yellow livery is at the forefront, ensuring the heritage is not lost in the modernised composition.
This project reflects my ability to combine heritage with contemporary design practices, and my understanding of Formula 1’s rich visual history. Each poster is a visual celebration of the enduring legacy of these iconic cars, drawing on nostalgia while embracing modern design principles.
